Doc Alliance Academy is an international platform for the development of film literacy. We promote artistic and pedagogical value of creative documentaries and make them easily accessible for educational purposes. We perceive documentary film as a distinctive creative and cultural practice. We explore film language from various angles, develop critical reflection and help to cultivate a sense for quality European cinema.
Doc Alliance Academy is powered by a network of seven key European documentary film festivals: CPH:DOX, DOK Leipzig, FID Marseille, Jihlava IDFF, Docs Against Gravity Film Festival, Visions du Réel and Doclisboa.Each of the festivals carries out educational activities alongside with its main programme. Altogether they offer an inspirational variety of approaches to film education. Doc Alliance is also running a VOD portal for legal streaming and download of creative documentaries from all over the world DAFilms.com.
Copenhagen International Documentary Film Festival is the third biggest documentary film festival in the world. Its educational programme explores the documentary genre from two different interdisciplinary perspectives: DOX:ACADEMY F:ACT is aimed mainly at students of journalism and social sciences while DOX:ACADEMY HYBRID is focused on students of art schools and explores the documentary genre as a creative form related to arts, antropology and cultural studies.
Doclisboa is a festival particularly interested in the new modes of relation between the cinematographic and the real. The festival helps to develop the relationship between school communities and the movie theatre by offering programmes for children of all age groups also involving parents. DocEscolas organizes workshops, debates and screenings for primary school pupils up to university students, including a teachers' workshop.
Docs Against Gravity
Docs Against Gravity Film Festival is the largest documentary film festival in Poland aiming at presenting the most eminent documentaries. Docs Against Gravity has developed a rich, intergenerational educational programme which presents exceptional, age-matched films for children, teachers, parents and also seniors.
International Leipzig Festival for Documentary and Animated Film is the largest German and one of the leading international festivals for artistic documentary and animated film as well as crossmedia art. The festival‘s educational outreach programmes offer students and teachers the opportunity to get to know documentary film as a cinematic genre and as a substantive medium.
FIDMarseille is recognized as a source of new cinemas, both documentary productions and fiction films. Taking place during school vacations, the festival collaborates with the national initiative Lycéens au cinéma, offering films and pedagogical materials, organizing masterclasses and debates directly at schools and in the festival's video library. FID is also involved in various cultural actions aimed at socially and professionally excluded citizens.
Jihlava International Documentary Film Festival is the largest event of its kind in Central and Eastern Europe, approaching creative documentary films primarily as unique artworks dealing with significant topics. Each year, the festival organizes a seminar of creative writing on documentary film and closely collaborates with the Documentary Film Centre based in Jihlava.
Visions du Réel
Visions du Réel, festival international de cinéma Nyon, is the largest Swiss documentary film festival screening almost 200 films the majority of which are world or international premieres. Its educational programme is both theoretically and practically oriented, developing initiatives of active and creative involvement of young people through filmmaking, blogging and awarding films with the special student jury award.
